Nestled on a modest, elevated block near Brisbane city, Red Hill redefines the Queenslander vernacular with a contemporary sensibility rooted in heritage. Stripped back to its studs, the project involved a complete internal overhaul, the addition of a front garage, an extension of the original upper level, and a new level beneath the original structure, an ambitious excavation maximising every inch of the site’s sweeping aspect, breezes, and natural light. Shaped through collaboration with a heritage architect, the design respects the house’s humble origins as a workers’ cottage, preserving original VJ walls and cathedral glass windows that reflect its heritage. These traditional elements balance seamlessly with modern materials and craftsmanship, such as fresh white tones, micro-cement finishes in wet areas, and tumbled marble in herringbone. The interior cleverly juxtaposes traditional features with contemporary touches, including minimal, modern joinery paired with a classic marble edge profile. The spatial flow reflects a city dweller’s rhythm, shifting from morning’s front terrace to evening’s poolside retreat, fostering a sense of movement and connection. Red Hill celebrates its heritage story while embracing elegant modernity.
